The Silver Thread National Scenic Byway is comprised of the entire length of Colorado Highway 149. It is possible to drive the entire 120 miles of the Silver Thread in one day. However, it is much more fun and interesting to take your time and explore all of its features.
There are historic sites, places to fish, hike, camp, have a picnic, and take photographs of the wildlife and scenery. Highlights of the Silver Thread include the historic mining towns of Lake City and Creede. Along the way, you’ll find landmarks such as the Alferd Packer Massacre Site, the Slumgullion Earthflow National Natural Landmark, Windy Point Overlook, the Rio Grande Pyramid Overlook, North Clear Creek Falls, and Wagon Wheel Gap. Large mammals such as moose and big horn sheep are often seen along the way.
