Hiking & Backpacking

Hiking offers peace to your harried mind.  With four National Wilderness Areas
and two Wilderness Study Areas, plus hundreds of miles of trails to explore,
you’ll find that your busy life fades away.  Some of the most splendid scenery
in the United States will fill you with wonder.

If you are feeling hardy, there are six
Fourteeners (peaks over 14,000 feet in
elevation) in the immediate area, along with dozens of
Thirteeners.  Trails to
the Fourteeners are generally busier than other trails.

Most of these climbs are located within one of four
Wilderness Areas:
Uncompahgre, Powderhorn, La Garita, and the Weminuche, or in the
Redcloud Peak or Handies Peak Wilderness Study Areas (WSA).  Motorized
vehicles and bicycles are not permitted in these places.

Extend your hiking experience by backpacking and camping along way.
